Connie Grimes, Chair of the Educational Scholarship Fund of the Waynesburg Area Chamber of Commerce has announced that the 17th annual scholarship in the amount of $2,500 was presented to Austin Winn of Waynesburg Central High School. Eighteen year old Austin plans to attend West Virginia University to pursue a degree in Engineering this fall. He is the son of Gary and Sherry Winn of Prosperity, Pa. and a 2007 graduate of Waynesburg Central High School where he maintained a 3.66 grade point average.
This scholarship, the seventeenth for the Chamber, is presented each year to a Greene County senior who plans to attend a college or trade school. The 2007 scholarship was awarded based on grade point average and a 500 word essay on "What their life goal is and how they plan to address it through their education". The students community involvement and school activities are reviewed in the case of a tie. Austin was a special guest of the Chamber at the May General Membership Meeting of Chamber members where he read his winning essay entitled "My purpose in Life and How I plan to Address it Through Education".
This year, 32 applications for the scholarship were received by the Chamber of Commerce. The committee had a difficult task of selecting one winner from the qualified field. The committee members were Penny Ketchem of Waynesburg University; Lucy Northrop and Jon Stevens of the Observer-Reporter; Jeff Widdup of First Federal Savings & Loan, Shirley Stockdale of the Clerk of Courts Office; Connie Grimes of Community Bank, Pam Blaker of Direct Results & Greene Saver and Lois Dille of Pre-Paid Legal Services.
The Chamber of Commerce would like to thank all who participated in the process.
